SPAND Continuing education meetings take place the first Tuesday of  the month in September, Octber, November, and May. There is a Saturday workshop in February. All are held in Richardson at the new Region 10 Abrams location at 904 Abrams Road in the Pecan Room. Registration is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. SPAND meetings begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. and sessions will end punctually at 8:00 p.m. 2.0 TX CEU’s are awarded at the cessation of each meeting. There are 6.0 CEU’s awarded at the Saturday Workshop.  Membership dues are $40 per year and must be paid on or before the September meeting of each year. Non-members may attend for $15 for each meeting. Students may attend the evening meetings for free and the Saturday workshops for $5.

February 4, 2012 - 8:30 - 3:30  Jennifer Meyer, M.A. CCC-SLP Fundamentals of Feeding Assessment and Therapy

  • This will be a 6-hour presentation to orient new therapists to the basic procedures of evaluating and treating feeding in pediatric patients in the home health setting.  It will cover the steps of performing a Feeding Assessment including History Taking, Oral Mechanism Evaluation, Feeding Skills, Writing a Diagnostic Statement, and making appropriate Recommendations. Then foundational concepts and techniques for treating Sensory-based, Motor-based, Structurally-based, Experientially-based, and Oral vs. Pharyngeal feeding difficulties will be presented.  Finally a listed of recommended items and resources for a Basic Feeding Kit will be offered.


     
    Educational Objectives: 
    As a result of this course participants will be able to:
    1. Outline the 5 major areas to address in Pediatric Feeding Assessment .
    2. Demonstrate techniques for assessment and treatment of sensorimotor capabilities in pediatric patients.
    3. Explain the rationale in prioritizing areas to address in treatment.
    4. Discuss ways to facilitate carryover of therapeutic techniques in the home setting.

November 1, 2011 - Alisa Woods, M.S. CCC-SLP Assistant Clinical Professor at TWU Stroke Center Dallas Treating Patients with Apraxia of Speech

  • Program Description:    Speech-Language Therapy will facilitate integration of the knowledge and experience of Speech-Language Pathologists into treating clients with apraxia of speech.  Participants will acquire different treatment approaches for treating patients with verbal apraxia.

    Program Objectives:     As a result of this presentation, workshop participants will be able to: evaluate and treat clients with verbal apraxia of speech based on the severity of the verbal apraxia.


    Program Activities:     1) Explore a variety of different treatment approaches in treating client’s with verbal apraxia of speech depending upon the severity level of the client’s verbal apraxia. 2) Participants will engage in individual (i.e. lecture format) and collaborative learning (brainstorming, problem-solving, Q and A). 3) Materials will include power point presentation and handouts.

October 4, 2011 - Barbara Fernandes Using mobile devices to deliver speech and language services

  • Program Objectives:

    1. Identify at least three accessibility features built in on the iPad;

    2. Describe how to update the iOS system on the iPad and update apps;

    3. Name the steps needed to set up the iPad for articulation and language therapy.

    Program Activities: The participants will have the opportunity to talk about their current uses of the devices and explore hands on set up guidance. Materials to include handouts & power point outline.

September 6, 2011 - Jyutika Mehta, PhD., CCC-SLP SLP Ethics Course

  • Program Description:This session will review the ethical responsibilities of

    SLPs and SLPAs in Texas including the principles of the ASHA Code of Ethics.

    Participants will also review & analyze case studies

    Program Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1). Fulfill the licensure

    board’s new requirement to complete 0.2 CEUs in ethics every two years, 2).

    Review the principles of the ASHA Code of Ethics, 3). Review and analyze

    pertinent case studies.
