SPAND Continuing education meetings take place the first Tuesday of the month in September, Octber, November, and May. There is a Saturday workshop in February. All are held in Richardson at the new Region 10 Abrams location at 904 Abrams Road in the Pecan Room. Registration is from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. SPAND meetings begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and sessions will end punctually at 8:30 p.m. 2.0 TX CEU’s are awarded at the cessation of each meeting. There are 6.0 CEU’s awarded at the Saturday Workshop. Membership dues are $40 per year and must be paid on or before the September meeting of each year. Non-members may attend for $15 for each meeting. Students may attend the evening meetings for free and the Saturday workshops for $5.

September 1, 2009 - Counseling Skills in Clinical Practice by Kathy Thomas
Objectives:
- Understand why counseling skills are important in the clinical process.
- Understand the key clinician characteristics that facilitate effective counseling.
- Identify common physical and emotional barriers that impede effective counseling
- Understand clinicians can better serve special populations (multicultural, low-income, elderly) through developing a specialized approach to clinical counseling methods.

November 3, 2009- Developing a Dementia Program by Peggy Watson and Nancy Shadowens
Objectives:
- Understand normal aging vs. dementia and differentiate between the various types of dementias and how they present; identify potential candidates based on an understanding of the dementia process; recognize the various types of memory as a basis for dementia management.
- Describe dementia in terms of ‘staging’; learn effective goal writing for SLP/OT/PT’s, learn successful interventions with difficult patients and utilize appropriate strategies and activities for achieving stated goals.
- Learn why functional maintenance programs (FMP) are important conclusions to each dementia therapy; SLP/OT/PT’s will learn how to write FMP content consistent with Medicare guidelines; learn to implement the FMP partnering with nurses; be able to develop a quarterly screening protocol.
- Learn about nurses unique role in producing a successful dementia program, for this type of programming is most successful with a team approach.
